There are several different ways to fix this problem ranging from a simple data wipe to a more drastic factory reset as a last resort. Sometimes the problem isn't with your credentials, but with the Play Store itself. To change this, go to the Play Store in Settings> Applications> Google Play Store. Be careful to select Google Play Store and not Services. After that, all you have to do is just hit the Uninstall Updates option. This will return you to the original version of the Play Store that was installed on your device.
The uninstall button may be in different places depending on the phone. Sometimes it can be in the upper right corner after clicking on the three dots.
The error may simply be a problem with logging, which sometimes occurs after the update Play Store. The first trick is to head to your phone's main Settings menu, then Accounts & Sync, and simply remove the Google Account that shows the Authentication Required error. Once that's done, you can add the account again and it should work fine. You can also restart your phone before adding it again just in case. It's possible that things are not syncing for some reason and that is simply the reason why the error is occurring. To fix this go to Settings, tap Accounts & sync, find your Google account, tap on it, and select Account sync. After that, you can go back to the Play Store and see if the authentication message is gone.
To clear data from the Play Store, you need to go to Settings, then Apps and find the Google Play Store. Tap it, scroll down and go to Storage. Then just select Clear Data.
You don't need to clear all data right away, you can try clearing the cache first if you want, but clearing the data will clear the cache as well.
If the previous step with refresh sync didn't work, try again after clearing cache and data - it may give better results.
This workaround avoids completely malfunctioning the Play Store app. Go to the web browser and go to Google Play Store. Try to download the app directly from here, not through the Google Play Store app. Simply log in to your Google account through your browser and install the selected application.
You can also do this in a browser on your computer. You will be prompted to log in to your Google account, and then to select the device you want to download the application. As long as your smartphone/tablet is connected to the Internet, the download should begin almost immediately.
